We all know that the great Homer of Greece was a blind person, but we got two epics from him only. In India, our beloved motherland, we found many creative persons who are or were blind persons too. - The uncrowned Kings of the Legendary Indian music industry Krishna Chandra Dey and Ravindra Jain are among them. The born blind Ravindra Jain has never seen the light. Krishna Chandra Dey lost his eyesight at the age of thirteen as a result of flying kites in the very strong daylight actually. But since they have been showing us light.
Krishna Chandra Dey - The Bengali singer, music composer, mentor and actor Krishna Chandra Dey took birth in a Bengali family in the year of 1893 on the holy day of Janmashtami ( that is why his parents kept his name ‘Krishna’) as the son of Shib Chandra Dey and Ratnamala Devi.
He sang songs mainly for the films made by the New Theatres and Kardar Saheb’s East India Company. He came into the earth, when the stars like K. L. Saigal and Pankaj Mullick were dominating the whole musical world. But it is true that, there were no body else in the same era, who was as much talented as the Andha Kabi was.
He had taken the musical training from the musical giants like Sashi Bhusan Chatterjee,Ustad Badal Khan,Dani Babu; Kanthey Maharaj(playing of Tabla), Dabir Khan, Satish Dutta , Radha Raman Das, Amarnath Bhattacharya, Darshan Singh, Ustad Keramutulla Khan, Sashi Bushan Dey, Satish Chattopaddhya, Darshan Singh.
Krishna Chandra Dey had provided his first recordings in the year of 1917 for the Gramophone Co Lts., at the very young age of 24.
People saw and heared him as the 'Basanta Doot' in the play "Basanta Leela" of Manilal Ganguly in the year of 1923 as one of the members of the famous Natyamandir troupe of Legendary Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. In the mythological play "Seeta" of Jogesh Chandra Chaudhury, he acted and sang songs as 'Baitulik’(1924). The Theatre lover public of Bengal had started to watch and listen Krishna Chandra Dey repeatedly in Rabindra Nath Tagore's "Visarjan"(1926),Sarat Chandra Ghosh's drama "Jaatichyuta" (1928),Sarat Chandra Ghosh's "Sree" (1929), Jaladhar Chattopadhya's "Ranga Rakhi" (1930),
In spite of his blindness, Krishna Chandra Dey acted very well in every drama. He was very spontaneous and absolutely fabulous to play the critical roles too. The magical effect of his unparalleled voice and the songs sang by him, touched and won the hearts of common people of all over the country and abroad.
‘Rungmahal’ was the name of theatrical company, established by Krishna Chandra Dey and his friend Rabindra Mohan Roy and some other people too(1931). Under the roof of ‘Rungmahal’Krishna Chandra Dey had presented (and acted too)many dramas; such as "Sri Sri Vishnu-Priya" ,"Bejoyini" , "Ranger Khela" , "Sindhu Gaurab" , "Asabarna", "Rajyyasri".
'Uttara' was his first 'Talkie film'. In the film "Chandidas" , he acted and sang too. Gradually he became music director of the films and plays made in kolkata and mumbai also.
Krishna Chandra Dey had been appointed to the Advisory Committee of the All India Bengal Music Conference ( 1938-39).
He had recorded many Hindustani, Urdu, Gujarati, Hindi, Bengali popular songs in his entire life.
Krishna Chandra Dey had produced some films under the banner of his own K.C. Dey Productions, such as "Purabi" , 'Anirban' , 'Dristi Dan'.
'Ektara' was the last film, performed by Krishna Chandra Dey in the year of 1957.
He recorded mostly those songs, which were composed by himself as well.
He took lyrics for his songs from the lyrisists like - Bani Kumar, Hemendra Kumar Roy, Sailen Roy, Ajoy Bhattacharya, Mohini Choudhury, Hemanta Gupta , Rabindra Nath Tagore etc.
Many of us do not awar of the fact that he was the first musical teacher and mentor of the great S.D. Burman.
He got married Roma Dey (maid name was Miss Tarakbala ). They had a son together, who died only at 14. Krishna Chandra Dey loved his wife too much and was very worried about the fact - who would take care of her, after his death! He breathed his last on the 28th of November 1962.
The noted singer Manna Dey is the nephew of Late Krishna Chandra Dey. Krishna Chandra Dey taught him and influenced him a lot. Actually Krishna Chandra Dey was the person, who made Manna Dey a singer and had done a fabulas job for the world. Because the chartered accountant father of Manna Dey wanted him to become a famous barrister. And Manna also decided to fulfill his fother’s dream only. Manna Dey kept a statue of Krishna Chandra Dey in his table yet.
